Ask Dr. Ads: What’s Up With The Two Blank NYT Ad Pages?

DrAdsforProfileWell the Doc opened up the old mailbag today and here’s what poured out.

Dear Dr. Ads,

So I read this on MediaPost’s Out to Launch and, yeah, I was intrigued.

“If you have a physical copy of today’s New York Times close Screen Shot 2013-10-24 at 12.48.48 AMby, take a look at section A, the main news portion of the paper. Notice anything strange? Like two consecutive blank pages? Intentionally done, the pages are part of a 20th Century Fox ad campaign to promote its upcoming film The Book Thief.”

(Wait – isn’t it 21st Century Fox now? Not to get technical about it.)

Anyway, whaddaya think, Doc?

Good stuff?

Or empty-headed?

– Out to Lunch

Dear Lunch:

First off, here’s the two-page ad from Wednesday’s Times (via Poynter, because the Times Replica edition doesn’t seem to have it, although the Doc’s home-delivery edition did) . . .

Our ‘Beat The Press Party’ Bakeoff (Two Different Worlds Edition Umpteen)

The Great Boston MediaWatch Dogfight proceeded apace last Friday, and for the umpteenth time the two local media hall monitors operated in parallel universes.

Start, as always, with Underdog Boston Herald’s Press Party. The Wayne’s World webcast featured this lineup of topics:

The end of the federal government shutdown and the Red Sox stealing media attention away from the candidates led the debate in the latest episode of the Boston Herald’s “Press Party” PressParty_ShowLogoweb show.

This week’s panel, including Herald chief political reporter Hillary Chabot and media consultant Jaclyn Cashman, the co-hosts of Herald Radio’s “Morning Meeting” show, also discussed the media’s continued harsh treatment of former GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and her possible political comeback.

And what, you might be wondering, was the media fail of the week? So glad you asked.

The media failure of the week was an MSNBC executive who demanded an investigation into why the new Fox News show hosted by Megyn Kelly had a sudden ratings surge in its debut week. The investigation showed the ratings were accurate and embarrassed MSNBC.

Now cut to Big Dog WGBH’s Beat the Press, which showcased these topics.

btplogo• Beat the Press took a beating this week after last Friday’s discussion about billionaire climate change skeptic David Koch and his contributions to NOVA, so we tackled it again.

• It’s been almost a year since Global Post journalist James Foley disappeared in Syria.

• Our panel rants and raves of the week for the week of Oct. 18, 2013.

One town, two different places.

DrAdsforProfileWell the Doc opened up the old mailbag today and here’s what poured out.

Dear Dr. Ads,

So I was watching the St. Louis Cardinals beat the stuffing out of the Los Angeles Dodgers last night.

At which point I started reading Friday’s New York Times sports section.

At which point I saw this full-page ad from Hispanics Across America.

Herald’s Koji-tations Are Krazy

The hardreading staff gets it that Pennant Fever Grips Hub Tabloid (just check out pages 1 through 5, along with the actual Sports section).

But then the feisty local fanzoid goes overboard.

A Flashback, Bahrs None

Excellent reader Bill Tanger just commented about this Jersey Shore salute (Bahrs Landing Edition) the hardwaxing staff posted after Hurricane Sandy last year.

My family also had a bungalow at Sandlass Beach, where we spent every summer we could. It was under the Tanger name and fronted on the elevated boardwalk that ran down the center of the bungalow colony. I am interested in obtaining copies of any photos of the bungalows.
I have several but they are all closeups of people standing in front of our bungalow. I am looking for shots of the boardwalk, Sandlass beach, the Bamboo Room or such…
Many thanks for posting this! I was deployed by FEMA for three months after Sandy and one day took the ferry over to Highlands and walked over to the old bungalow site. It was a heartbreaker, I can assure you. We grew up in a perfect little paradise.

Ditto, as we previously noted.

We were the East Side Carrolls, eight of us living in a three-room apartment at 89th & 3rd in the Big Town. The rest of the Carroll Clan lived in three-bedroom apartments in the Hell’s Kitchen projects on the West Side.

But every summer we all joyfully migrated to the Jersey Shore, where the East Side Carrolls occupied a three-room bungalow (with two porches that doubled as bedrooms) on the Sea Bright side of the Shrewsbury River, while the rest of the Carroll Clan occupied bungalows on the Highlands side.

There was a thoroughly comforting symmetry to it all.

And an additional cheerful symmetry to our summers in the bungalow colony (at upper right) alongside the Sandlass Beach Club (an oral history of which is here).

Picture 2

There was the Shrewsbury River on one side of us, and the Atlantic ocean on the other.

As the hardswimming staff recollects, it was always high tide somewhere during those blissful summers.

Like you said, Bill: A perfect little paradise.

Harper’s Puts The Accent On Bazaar For Branded Content

Harper’s Bazaar, the flossy fashion mag, has put out the welcome mat for stealth marketers in its newly renovated website.

From the New York Times:

Harper’s Redesigns Its Web Site and Embraces Branded Content

HARPER’S Bazaar is joining the growing list of media properties whose publishers are supplementing more traditional forms of advertising with sponsored content.

The magazine, which is owned by Hearst, will unveil a Adco2-popup-268x290redesigned Web site at Bazaar.com next Monday that will include an updated look and feel (including more white space on its pages) and the ability to share images and text on social media platforms more easily . . .

Harper’s will also introduce an editorial feature called #TheList that will run daily on its Web site and will highlight top trends culled by the magazine’s editorial staff — everything from the newest fall fashion runway looks to makeup tips . . .

#TheList will also offer something for advertisers, who will be able to sponsor the feature in exchange for having some of their products woven into the edited lists.

But wait! There’s more! . . .

Russel Pergament’s Jewish News Service Is Totally Old Testament

Several days ago the hardreading staff posted an item about the Jewish News Service running this ad in the Boston Herald but not the Boston Globe.

Picture 4

We also said we’d try to contact JNS founder (and inveterate publishing bunny) Russel Pergament to ask, among other things, if he’ll be advertising in the Globe anytime soon.

And so we did . . .

The Tall Guy Wins, Yes? (NYC Mayoral Edition)

Look at this picture (via the New York Times) and tell us who will be the next mayor of New York.

Screen Shot 2013-10-17 at 2.25.32 AM

That’s right.

Bill de Blasio, the tall guy on the right. (Although he’s on the left politically. Not to get technical about it.)

The tall guy almost always wins.

And definitely will in this case.
