NYT Sunday Review Cartoonist Is Just Not Funny

If Brian McFadden isn’t the lamest guy since Gunsmoke’s Chester, he’ll do until someone else comes along.

McFadden’s latest contribution to the New York Times Sunday Review section (click to enlarge):

You’d need to go a long way to find anything more hackneyed, predictable, knee-jerk – your pejorative goes here.

The Times Sunday Review has enough problems without including this dreck.

What’s the problem? Seems spot on to me.

It’s not funny. It’s not clever. It’s just lazy.

Not funny at all. Just because it’s a comic strip doesn’t mean it has to be funny. And just because it’s not funny doesn’t make it any less true.

Not a good sentence. Hackneyed, predictable, knee jerk things are all around us. You’d have to go a long way to avoid them.
And hackneyed and predictable and not very funny as the cartoon is, it’s understated.

Perhaps you would prefer Tom Tomorrow more? And, bonus, it makes fun of Tom Friedman!

  4. I shouldn’t post a comment, but I am a fan! Sorry you feel this way, but all criticism is valid when it’s not mean. Keep doing what your doin’!

    more McFadden – less Pepsi.

  7. Hi John,
Humor is subjective. Next time say “I don’t get the joke,” or “this isn’t funny to me.”

  8. Dane Henas's avatar Dane Henas says:

2 years later and it’s still not funny…

  9. Ryan's avatar Ryan says:

Sorry. I’m with the original author conclusion. Not funny, not particularly creative either. Yes, McFadden sounds like a good egg….but the NYT is PRIME real estate. The political cartoons should be exemplary. If one guy can’t do it week after week (and that is asking alot), then rotate it for God’s sake.

Think back to Calvin and Hobbs, Crazy Kat, or a myriad of other witty material. Yes, NOT political, but talent and creativity was there.

I say this as a guy with progressive politics. I think McFadden is farther left, but not by a lot, and I still don’t like the general message.
