Oh Yes Katie Did

It’s not even the Mistress Katie photo in this month’s edition of Harper’s Bazaar. (Swell video of Katie’s big photo shoot here.)

What’s more disconcerting is the text of the article.

She’s still rocking a young look, thanks to tennis once a week, Spinning, yoga, Pilates. She’s a little bored with Pilates, which she started up three years ago to help calm her back. Like most of American womanhood, she wouldn’t mind if she were taller, with thinner thighs. She doesn’t deny she believes in Botox: “I think if you want to do some tweaks here and there, there’s nothing wrong with that.” High-definition television has been kind to her, she says. “I think the fear factor of high def was overblown,” she says, but adds, “I think God has a wonderful way of making your eyes start to go as your face does. I really can’t see very well. Up close? Like in the mirror?” She giggles drily. “I always worry after I’ve done my makeup that I’m gonna look like What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

I can’t wait to see the video of the glamour photo shoots of Bob Schieffer and Jim Lehrer.

And why is an anchor only glamorous if she’s on one of the commercial broadcast networks? Bring on photo shoots of Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff!

Couric has always played the I’m Cute card.

Her talents are overblown, and her low ratings are earned.

“Couric has always played the I’m Cute card.”

Yes she did, and it worked for her when she was co-anchor at that fluffy morning network news magazine. I suppose it even got her the interview with Poppy Bush when she got him to admit he was in the loop during Iran/Contra, but, as they say, live by the sword, die by the sword, and now she can’t escape the reputation she made for herself. Her reputation is perky and fluffiness, and looking stern while speaking tersely, doesn’t give you the gravitas to do the job of serious new reporting.

Best moment of the Obama inauguration – still – is Couric’s asking her network correspondent in Gaza, shortly after Obama took the oath, if he’d seen any “changes there since Obama took office?” The correspondent’s reaction was priceless — speechless, stammering, “Ah…no…” all the time clearly wondering if his answer was going to cost him his job.
