Quote o’ the Day (Nipple Ring Edition)

There’s nothing quite like the New York Times Style section.

Exhibit Umpteen (from yesterday’s edition): Erica M. Blumenthal’s Browsing column.

Seriously?

For a great historical perspective on the Times Style section, see Bonfire of the Inanities by Jacqui Shines at The Awl.

Seriously.

Your hot link to the piece in The Awl has an extra “http//” so it doesn’t work as it is–but you can, of course, go to The Awl and find it pretty easily (too much finger enthusiasm at your keyboard for that “http” prefix, I guess;-).
But the piece is not only extremely long (12,000 words!) but frankly, it was disorgazined, semi-coherent, poorly written, and very hard to follow or get its point. Sorry, I don’t see it as a “great historical perspective”, it’s not even rambling: it has that “tossed off” style that may satisfy the author’s need to download everything he knows or has heard, but IMO does not at all satisfy the reader’s needs at all.
Very disappointing, I kept hoping it would get past its preamble-ramble-random walk mode and get down to a clear presentation, albeit with some color and anecdotes. Never happened. In the end, I have no idea of what the author was trying to say about that section, except that maybe it is/was an unfocused mess with constantly changing themes and intentions…maybe? Beats me…..

Thanks for the heads up, Bill. Fixed the link.

Sorry you didn’t like the piece. I found it a wealth of information. But that’s what makes horse races, eh?
